For this kind of application, his trick can work very well, because you have only one light source: the sunlight. The problem in this case is that the shape of naturally formed objects is very difficult to obtain procedurally, and my hand-modelling skills with Wings3d are not up to the task yet (I’m a slow learner). So I opted for a blob, with a big central component and many positive and negative components squashed and rotated around it, to simulate some sort of wind erosion. It didn’t work as well as I hoped…
